Polar diagram Radar cross section is commonly presented in a polar diagram. With everybody’s participation this site can be a valuable resource for the boating community. A complete characterization of a radar reflector includes the RCS at all bearing angles, or azimuths from 0 to 360 and all elevations angles from -90 to +90 although a smaller range of elevation usually is adequate. Any and all comments, suggestions, questions, and input from visitors are welcome. Detecting recreational vessels is emphasized as their small size presents unique challenges. My vision for this website is to make it a central source of information and data relating to marine radar, radar reflectors, radar target enhancers, and their role in avoiding collisions at sea. I also decided to develop this website to make the information more readily available to the boating community. they were not certain I was a yacht, so presumably my radar image was strong enough to make them uncertain of my size. The result, my book Radar Reflectors for Cruising Sailboats: Why they Work How to Evaluate Them What the Limitations Are, was published in 2005. The RCS of the radar reflector should have a minimum consistent RCS of 2m2. I launched a project to understand the problems associated with detecting recreational boats with radar, how and why radar reflectors work, how to evaluate and compare different designs, and their role in minimizing the risk of collisions at sea. At 5 miles As no radar reflector can reflect more light than hits it in the first place so size is a limiting factor independant of design. So imagine a searchlight on a big ship trying to get a relection off the little radar reflector you put up the mast. It seemed to me that much of the information available to the public was either incomplete, misleading, or simply wrong. Radar works just like light in many ways.
